Gerald Coteman – Director of Community Engagement


Gerald Coteman is Managing Partner of The Focus Group, Business and Management consultants. He was born and educated in Cambridge and has wide experience of the private, public and not for profit sectors. A former Cambridge City and Cambridgeshire County Councillor, he joined the then Cambridge Health Authority as a Board Member in the early 1980s.

He is currently a Director of Cambridge Building Society.

Over the past 30 years, he has acted in a professional capacity for a variety of NHS and other government organisations in areas such as business planning, communications, quality improvement, workforce development, performance and risk management and public engagement. He was a member of the Board at North Herts NHS Trust before joining the Addenbrooke's Board in 1999 and became a member of the Board of Cambridge University Hospitals Foundation Trust in 2004. Latterly he was Chairman of Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust in Harlow.

Nationally he served as a Board Director of NHS Employers Co Ltd and his overseas health study trips include visits to New York Presbyterian Hospital and the Horizons Specialty Hospital in Las Vegas.

Gerald has long been a highly visible champion for the improved management of chronic health conditions and end of life care. He has also developed expertise in the delivery of occupational health services and was invited to contribute to Dame Carol Black’s 2008 review of ‘Health of the Working Age Population’.

In a voluntary capacity he heads the Elizabeth Coteman Fund, a family charity established in memory of his late wife, who died from Pancreatic Cancer in April 2010.
