Stephan Herzig
Stephan Herzig is Director of the Institute for Diabetes and Cancer (IDC) at Helmholtz Center Munich (HMGU), full professor for molecular metabolic control at the medical faculty of the Technical University Munich and honorary professor at the University of Heidelberg. After obtaining his PhD from the University of Göttingen in 1999 he moved to the U.S. for a postdoctoral training at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla, California. In 2003 he relocated to Germany to establish an independent junior group at the German Cancer Research Center, where he was promoted to department head in 2010. In 2012 he became full professor at the University of Heidelberg and eventually accepted an offer from the HMGU in 2015. The research of Stephan Herzig focuses on regulatory and transcriptional networks in metabolic health and disease as well as the crosstalk between metabolism and cancer. In line with this, the Herzig lab aims at identifying novel therapeutic targets for treating metabolic dysfunction. To date, he has published more than 100 peer-reviewed papers including numerous publications in Nature, Nature Medicine, Science, and Cell Metabolism, and holds several patents. A number of prestigious awards have been granted to Stephan Herzig, exemplified by an Emmy-Noether Award (German Research Association, DFG), a Marie-Curie Excellence Award (European Commission) and a Reinhart-Koselleck Project (DFG). Herzig is the scientific director of the Helmhotz Diabetes Center (HDC), coordinator of the Helmholtz Future Topic “Aging and Metabolic Reprogramming”, vice-chair of the Collaborative Research Center 1118 (DFG), and spokesperson of the Helmholtz Graduate School Environmental Health (HELENA).
